The Quaint Signs of Pound Ridge
There is an article in the March 2009 "Bedford Magazine" about these "finger pointing" signs. They are from the early 1950's when Guy Rainsford, an advertising art director, suggested the motif after seeing similar signs in his travels across the country. Then again there was such a sign on Mead Street in Waccabuc to the North since the 1940's so perhaps it was just a local influence. Nonetheless, it gives the feeling that they were from Colonial Times!
They were made by local handymen of wood and later were replaced by metal.

It is located on the Connecticut border of Westchester County, adjacent to New Canaan, about 18 miles northeast of White Plains, 40 miles from mid-town Manhattan. Pound Ridge's population is 4,450. An area of country characterized by lushly wooded hills, combined with rugged cliffs and rock outcroppings, Pound Ridge offers a unique setting for elegant country life: antique colonials, historically significant and beautifully restored, are prominently dotted along the winding lanes in serene compatibility with spectacular modern contemporaries, soaring above on high cliffs...or tucked away in total seclusion. Educational Facilities
Pound Ridge is served by two school districts. Children in the central and southern portion of the town attend Bedford Central Schools; Pound Ridge Elementary (Grades K to 5), Fox Lane Middle School (Grades 6, 7 and 8) and Fox Lane High School. The northern part of the town is in the Katonah-Lewisboro district and children attend Lewisboro Elementary (Grades K to 5), John Jay Middle School (Grades 6, 7 and 8) and John Jay High School. Both school systems offer high quality education and a broad variety of interscholastic sports and activities.

Recreational Facilities
Ward Pound Ridge Reservation offers 4,315 acres of marked trails, ski trails and stone shelters for camping enthusiasts. It is possible to take part in nature and biology studies year-round. Various other reserved land such as the Nature Conservatory, Halle Ravine and gifted land to the town all total over one third of the town’s acreage reserved for green space and or recreation use.
